Who’s the best advertising, digital, media or marketing recruiter in Australia?

I must get asked about recruiters at least once a week. Who’s good to deal with and why? So I thought I’d put the question to the internet… and the humans who frequent it, and hopefully create a useful list for everyone along the way.

Add your thoughts using this structure (no need to copy and paste it):
Name, Company, Twitter
Website
What sort of roles and industries they’re great at
Why they’re great

It would be great to get a list of over 20 recruiters to help people make an informed decision.

Please, only constructive comments. And, no, I’m not looking – but one of the 5 people sitting next to you probably is (well, seeing as most agencies have a churn rate of somewhere around 20-30% per year).

  • Katie
Daphne van der Kieft, Aquent @daphnevdk

    aquent.com.au/go/daphnevdk

Specialising in:Creative Front End Design, Development and Business Management Talent in the Digital Space.

Daphne's great because she truly approaches every situation with her Talent AND Client's best interests in mind. She immerses herself within the industry through events and networking; she also comes from an Advertising background, so she understands client's business challenges and objectives.

Daphne's recruited solely within the creative space for 10 years now; 8 out of those with Aquent both in LA and Sydney. She assess all her talent to ensure client expectations are met.
She volunteers her time by lecturing outside of work at local design schools and centres on how creatives can take their design to market.

She also listens... which is rare in the recruitment world.
  • Steve Gilles, SustainAbility Consulting, @stevelikesyou
    http://stevegilles.com/

Digital, media, support and marketing roles.

Steve is a remarkable face amidst the web scene, combining technical know-how, a solid list of contacts and a real willingness to do things right, let it be through following-up with clients and talent, engaging social media or simply ensuring that your questions get answered. The advice he's dispensed has always been extremely helpful; even better, he's always been available via phone and email to talk things through.

If you haven't already had the opportunity to engage Steve during industry events such as Webjam etc, I really do recommend picking his brains - not only does he take a sincere interest in what you do, but he's a hoot to hang around.
  • A second vote for Steve Gilles here. Very switched on and has actually worked with technology, so has a much deeper understanding than a lot of other recruiters I've interacted with. Plus he makes an effort to be around the type of people he wants to recruit.

And further: he's a super nice guy too.

    Doug Sherrard (@dougsherrard)
Consultant & Head of Digital @ the ladder.

Digital, Social Media & Interactive Roles.

Doug responds to emails, tweets and linkedin in a way that shows he is a nice, considerate and genuine recruiter - helping you not necessary find a job but find your direction.
    He gets the scene too.
  • Agree with Sebastian here - Doug gets my vote.

He's great because he takes an interest in you whether there is a role ready or not. He's thinking beyond the vacancy sheet in front of him. And he's a good bloke. And he hasn't paid me to say this... yet.
  • Great question Mark.

I'm not looking either, but if I was looking to recruit someone for my team the first place I would go would be LinkedIn, rather than a traditional recruiter.

I expand on my views in an old B&T column from June, which is on Slideshare:

    http://www.slideshare.net/AdamJoseph/linkedin-connected-to-well-connected-bt-june-2009

In my opinion, the best potential recruiter is always YOU ... that is, if you have the time, the inclination and the know-how!
  • Great idea Mark. I'll nominate:

Doug Sherrard at The Ladder - @dougsherrard
    www.theladder.com.au

    Doug recruits across digital roles.

Doug is simply a great recruiter. As a job-seeker he actually makes you feel like he gives a shit about what you want from your career. He's honest and helpful. I'm not one of his clients but that sort of methodology has to be good for them too.

He also does the networking thing really well - always trying to find out who's who in the industry. He uses Twitter well to advertise roles. More than that, he regularly reaches out to his network to try to help out people that he sees the potential in but are unsuited to his current roles.

One of the good guys with a great reputation.
  • Happener - @happener

    www.happener.com

The best at Digital, Media, Advertising

    They are the best at it because;

    1. They know the industries
    2. They know what the roles require unlike alot of other recruiters who seem to work on buzzwords.
    2. They form a relationship with both clients and talent.
