Hi, you – my future SEO soulmate.

We may not know each other yet but professional life together could be a wonderful thing.

You see, I’m looking for a mastermind SEO brain for McCann Sydney (yes, I know the website isn’t built for search – yet) and I’ve been scouring LinkedIn, Twitter lists and contacting friends to find you. But I thought it was time to get a little public about it.

You probably want to know a few things before you decide if you can ‘complete me’. So, here you go…

What’s in it for you:

  • The ability to shape search at McCann from the ground-up – this is a ’senior’ role
  • The possibility of growing into a larger strategy role depending on your ambitions – eg brand planning, digital strategy, social strategy, community management, ecrm, ideas
  • The potential to grow a team of SEO do-ers under you

What will make this one of the more unique roles in Australia:
Search is a key part of every project (online and offline) that we do so we’ll be looking for you to very practically but also laterally contribute to the bigger strategic and creative picture for all of our clients. You may very well have ‘ideas’ – big ones – well, if they’re good we’ll back you to make them happen. You won’t be kept in a box. We’ll play to your strengths.

What you need to know about us:

  • McCann Worldgroup is one of the biggest advertising groups in the world
  • In Sydney, we have a mix of local and global clients: Xbox, Michael Hill, MasterCard, Melbourne Central, Midas, Pfizer, ALP, AAPT, Kleenex, Uncle Tobys, Nestle and more
  • We’re based on William St near Kings Cross and have offices in Melbourne and Auckland
  • We create stuff for TV, the internet, social networks, mobile, print, radio etc
  • Since you and I will be working pretty closely together you may also be interested in finding out about my background

What I think I’m looking for:

  • Experience: I’m looking for someone with at least 5 years experience in SEO – bonus points if you have a few years working professionally (ie in a related field) in addition to this
  • Process: I want you to land here on Day One with a proven methodology
  • Skills: keyword research, content strategies, on and off-site SEO, article marketing, video syndication, universal search know-how
  • Tools: I want you to have an opinion on which tools are the best and what we’ll need to invest in
  • Track record: I want to know about results; I want to be able to see proof in real-time about what you’ve done
  • Personality: curious, nimble, excited about digital (you’d be ‘doing digital’ whether you had a job or not), happy in jeans & t-shirt as much as the odd dress-up day
  • Presence: I’d love someone who has a following on Twitter, in online communities, through a blog – but this isn’t a must-have
  • Up to date: I’m keen to understand how you stay up to date with search trends
  • Ability to present to clients and peers – very important: you make things simple, not complex; and can present at conferences
  • Failure: you’ve failed and are proud to admit it because you learnt something along the way

If this sounds like you
Please send me a short email by 5pm, Friday 5th February, 2010:
mark.pollard  [at]  mccann.com.au

And include in the email:

  • a contact phone number
  • a link to your LinkedIn profile
  • a link to your Twitter account
  • a link to your website/blog or quality online content you’ve made
  • the name of someone who’d recommend you
  • the last book you read
  • 3 achievements you’re proud of: 2 professional (SEO-related where possible), 1 personal
  • where you see yourself in 2 years

You don’t need to include any more than that – and please don’t write a long essay; bullet points are fine.

Confidentiality promised
I’ve given you my personal email address above so nobody will know that you’ve contacted me until – and if – we decide to introduce you to more people at McCann.

I will make a shortlist in the 2nd week of February to follow up.
