Don’t use social media (a presentation)

I just presented the presso below to the Australian Direct Marketing Association digital class (#adma09). It was a great opportunity to pull some of my random thinking together.

Thank you to the friends who answered my questions: ‘how would you define social media?’ via Twitter and ‘tell me 3 things you’ve learnt about it’. Many of their answers are in the presentation (which makes more sense with some talking), and thanks to Mike Zeederburg (Profero) and Ben Cooper (The Population) for the invitation.

I asked the class to write down their definition of ’social media’ at the start of the session. Here are some answers:

“Voyeurism at its best, but with a practical use: connecting people and topics you are interested in, from places that suit you.”

“Social media is the process of people communicating with each other using public media.”

“Social media is a platform for sharing ideas, thoughts, content. It enables interaction with others and can be instant.”

“The biggest marketing database the world has ever seen” – Mike Gerber

“Social media is just like any other media – only uniquely and rapidly distributed through social networks with the ability to immediately and easily contribute.”

“Social media is a medium that allows people to link together: sharing ideas and forging strategic partnerships – personal and professional.”

  • Cheers for the presentation last night, good to hear a bit of open mindedness and thinking compared to what seem to be the generally accepted hard and fast rules of social media 101.

Thanks also for including my definition No#5. Not to be too technical but isnt social media a real misnomer as I generally think of social media as the content that we create and upload whether user generated or professionally done, putting the focus on the social networks and communities whether that is digg, fbook etc to spread, comment, mash etc. So it is really the social networks we should be talking about as compelling media (whether a TVC, magazine article or UGC) is being revolutionized through its distribution and openness to be contributed to more than anything.

But then again I like your response to one of the questions about what or what it isnt “I don’t know” ha ha well said
