Beliefs – strategically speaking

These are some of the principles I find myself coming back to time and time again. I’m trying to apply them to how I ‘be’ at work and how the brands I work with ‘be’ with their ‘customers’ (awkward word). There are many others but I find these 7 (that I’ve picked from the universe – no claims of originating any of them!) have stuck. Ooooh, gooo-ey.

1. Evidence-based strategy: insight and data speak volumes
2. Be useful: make a difference by making a difference
3. Be usable: help people achieve their goals
4. Be unique: blending in will get you nowhere
5. Listen and respond: 2 ears, 1 mouth
6. Test and learn: continuous improvement rules
7. Learn by doing: make stuff

What are yours?

  • @Joel I agree. Even if the belief system is temporary it's worth putting time into it - useful compass. Until you need a new compass.

@Kate Yes, I like the idea of a 'values based life'. It just takes a core group of people in a company to do this to make it part of the culture. It's definitely a little quirky for some but hopefully it will become the norm.
  • Hi Mark,

Great that you're off and racing. I've always liked the saying 'you have 2 ears and 1 mouth and you should use them in that order'.

I heard the very inspiring Ann Sherry (now at Carnival Cruises) speak last year and she talked about being the person you are at work, at home, anywhere. Rather than donning different personalities for different facets of life. I guess this is how you live a values based life. I think this is something to aspire to.

  • I think it is quite important to know what your believe structure is. Then to be able to link this into how you do things. And finally keep it all working together to provide maximum benefit to your whole life.
