4 brand ideas for Twitter

I have no idea whether Twitter has a fancy brand idea. I’d assume they do. But, well… I was in the gym and started thinking about it.

Strategy 1: Position Twitter as a tool that helps people connect through authentic self-expression

Truth: (obvious and plain) Twitter helps people express themselves and connect with other people.

Thought:
Tweet yourself. The world will follow.

Strategy 2: Position Twitter as a tool for the curious

Thought A:
A world worth following

Thought B:
Following?

Strategy 3: Position Twitter as the best way to keep tabs on NOW

Truth: There is arguably no other 1-to-many free, public communication tool that is as immediate as Twitter.

Thought:
Now. Interestingly live.

Strategy 4: Position Twitter as a tool for change agents

Truth: With Twitter, people are taking on rotting establishments… and winning.

Thought:
Tweet the world new

    You are what you follow.

Truth - Social Networking is just as much about who you associate yourself with, as who you actually are. Just as 'You are what you eat.' People's perception of you is directly impacted by who follow on Twitter.

Qauntity (number of followers) is only one metric of 'Twitter Success", and a poor one at that. More interesting is who / what you are following.

Choose carefully, the Twitter World is watching..
  • I like a world worth following as that's certainly the main benefit I get from it - out of the 1000+ people I follow, I am guessing less than a third are from the UK.

With other research showing that most people we connect with over social networks are people we already know, Twitter has a function in breaking down barriers, in part because unlike with, say, Facebook, it's normal practice to follow people you don't already know.

A few weeks ago Twitter had a fresh $ injection to finance their operational costs for the coming few years...and although the Twitter brand has perhaps not been formalized in a nice marketing slogan there certainly is an existing reputation, or brand.

So..for me the first question is: how is Twitter going to make money, what will their business model be? A partnership with Google AdSense, Paid premium accounts? Partnership deals with Telco's?
